Internships are key

To figure out and plan my future I feel like I should take a look at my past, you know, to see how I got here.

I’ve always been a Business major at High Point University but I didn’t choose Marketing until my sophomore year. My mother always badgered me about internships and how I needed to find one when I wasn’t really interested. What broke college student wants to spend the summer working for someone else and not getting paid for it? NOT ME! But I listened and it actually paid off.

My first two internships told me exactly what I didn’t want to end up doing with my life. Finally last summer I had an experience that put all the puzzle pieces together. I worked for a nutritionist named Keri Glassman who is better known as Keri Glassman, Nutritious life.  She not only works with clients as a nutritionist but she is also nationally recognized as an expert nutritionist. This means she is on shows like Good Morning America and The View and she writes articles for Women’s Health. I landed an opportunity running her social media department and I instantly fell in love. I struggled with adapting to her brand “voice” at first but I figured it out! I was in charge of her Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest accounts and enjoyed every minute of it. What I did all summer was find ways to build followers and talk to people over social media. It was seriously the best experience and led me to what I know I want to do after I graduate in May.

Finally after knowing exactly what I want to do I can look for jobs! So I guess the moral of the story is take the time and try out different things. I don’t think I would have been so confident in my future if I didn’t accept that internship!

Behind the Blog

How to start my first blog?... I guess how I should start a blog about me, as well tell you (whoever you may be) about me!

My name is Rachel Epstein originally from Madison, NJ. I am finishing out my senior year at High Point University in High Point, NC. I am a Business major and Marketing minor.  My thing, or well what I hope to be my thing, is Social Media.  I want to have the job that I bet almost every teenager wants right now… I want to run all the Social Media platforms for a company. Why not take what I religiously use everyday and turn it into a career.  Don’t let me forget that I love seeing how the online community responds to posts that I create. I am highly active on my personal accounts such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest. It sounds weird that I wouldn’t already have a blog that I post on. I guess I am good at tapping into other company’s voices and writing for them but I haven’t found my voice yet. So bear with me while I “find my voice”!

So up next, I feel like I owe all of you an explanation for the name of my blog. I did not want this blog to be about one thing in particular; I want the freedom to write about what is going on in my life. I want to be able to talk about what I want to talk about. What’s better than blogging about your life? NOTHING. So back to fight or flight… as I told you before I am a graduating senior, with only 4 months left until I enter the “real world.” Remembering only a little from freshman year psychology I remember this (with a little help from the internet): The fight-or-flight response, also known as the acute stress response, refers to a physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of something that is terrifying, either mentally or physically. I mean it doesn't exactly correlate with graduating, finding a job and moving all over the world, but I mean it kind of does right? No one is pointing a gun to my head but the pressure of what's going to happen in 4 short months sure does feel like it sometimes.

So this is my journey from college senior to a “real” human… I hope you enjoy the ride.
